A user can earn up to 275,000 Membership Rewards points in a single year by acquiring the American Express Gold and Platinum cards in a specific order. At an estimated value of $0.01 per point, these combined bonuses are worth $2,750 toward travel.
To secure this total, a user must first apply for the Gold Card, which offers a welcome bonus of up to 100,000 points after spending $6,000 in eligible purchases within the first six months. If the Platinum Card is acquired first, the user may become ineligible for the Gold Card's welcome bonus.
Following the Gold Card, the user can apply for the Platinum Card, which offers up to 175,000 points after spending $12,000 in eligible purchases within the first six months. Some sources indicate that American Express may not approve multiple cards within a 90-day period, requiring a wait between applications.
Both cards carry high annual fees: $325 for the Gold Card and $895 for the Platinum Card. The Platinum Card provides over $3,500 in annual credits, including $600 for luxury hotel stays, $400 for dining with Resy, and $300 for digital entertainment. The Gold Card offers $120 in Uber Cash, $120 in dining credits, and $100 in Resy credits.
At $0.01 per point, the total potential travel reward is $2,750.
