Elder caregiving same-generation same-household household budget impacts
Caregivers of family members moving into the home increase their grocery costs and time commitments for medical appointments. Long-term care insurance can cover expenses for nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and in-home care that regular health insurance and Medicare do not typically cover. Nearly 63 million Americans are now caring for an aging loved one or family member with a disability or illness, according to a AARP study. Stoy Hall, founder and CEO of Black Mammoth, says if a parent or grandparent is moving in, families must assess the dependent's assets to set boundaries on what the parent can provide and what the caregiver provides. For those with no assets, the same-generation household budget supports the costs. For those moving in with assets, the same-generation household budget supports the costs up to the boundary of the parent's assets.
