North Carolina residents face identity theft risks from fake IRS websites
Identity thieves can use stolen Social Security numbers to open credit accounts, take out loans, or steal tax refunds. Attorney General Jeff Jackson has warned North Carolinians to be alert for tax day scams. Scammers are using fake websites designed to look like official IRS pages that promise unrealistic tax refunds to lure victims into entering sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, phone numbers, and email addresses. The IRS does not call people unexpectedly to demand immediate payment or request payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or money orders.
