Klarna’s payment split rolls out in Spain and Italy as Douglas bets on flexible finance to revive lagging stores

Customers in Spain and Italy can now split Douglas purchases into interest-free instalments using Klarna. The move targets consumers in markets where Douglas has struggled, particularly Spain, where declining sales and accumulated losses have weighed on performance. Klarna, a digital bank with over 118 million global users, has operated in Spain since 2020 and will leverage its existing infrastructure to support the rollout. The expanded partnership allows Douglas to offer flexible payment options both online and in-store, aiming to boost customer accessibility and reverse sales trends. The collaboration builds on prior integrations in other European markets, positioning buy-now-pay-later as a tool for retail resilience in underperforming regions.

Customers may also choose to pay in full or use a "pay later" option. Mindfactory CEO Marcel Kirchner stated the partnership aims to provide the gaming community with a checkout process that is intuitive, secure and flexible. Nico Schenck, Head of Germany at Klarna, said the integration provides tools to help customers stay in control of their finances.

Staged Crash Fraud Adds $300 to the Average New York Auto Premium

Staged crashes add as much as $300 per year to the average New York policyholder's premium. The Insurance Information Institute estimates these frauds totaled 1,729 confirmed incidents in 2023. New York drivers paid an average of $1,935 for personal auto insurance in 2024. Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed a reform package to cut those premiums by 15 to 20 percent. The package would cap damages for pain, suffering, and emotional distress at $100,000 in cases where the at-fault driver was uninsured, impaired, or committing a felony. It would tighten the legal definition of serious injury. The proposal would limit non-economic damages for drivers found to be more than 51 percent at fault in a crash. Insurers would be required to return profits above a specified threshold to policyholders.
