Consumers reported losing $12.5 billion to scams. More than $5 billion of that total was lost to investment scams. Job scams cost consumers $750 million. Online shopping scams resulted in losses over $16 million. These losses are driven by scammers scammers using AI technology to impersonate impersonate others through fake voices, photos, and videos. AI acts as a microtargeting tool, allowing scammers to personalize messages to convince people to hand over money.
