Trump's funding freeze on torture survivors' rehabilitation creates staffing furloughs
The Center for Victims of Torture furloughed 430 staff after the White House froze US$20m of the organization's funding. The freeze occurred within days of Donald Trump's re-entry into the White House in January 2025. The organization, which provides clinical care to survivors from 88 countries, fought the cuts to the Supreme Court, where it lost. Following the freeze, the organization was ordered via email to shut down lifesaving programs in remote refugee camps across the Middle East and Africa.
