Student-loan borrowers may retain old borrowing limits through exception if enrolled in same program as of June 30, 2026

Borrowers who were enrolled in a program of study as of June 30, 2026, and received a federal loan or parent PLUS loan for that program before July 1, 2026, may retain the prior borrowing limits if they remain enrolled at the same institution and pursue the same credential. This exception applies for three academic years or until the program is completed, whichever is shorter. The exception does not extend to borrowers who change programs or institutions. Trump's student-loan repayment overhaul, which takes effect on July 1, includes new borrowing caps for students and parents. The changes aim to simplify the repayment system and limit excessive borrowing.
