Non-Life Insurance Claims Outpace Premium Growth in Taiwan, Straining Margins
Non-life insurers in Taiwan reported net income of $1.0b (NT$31.1b) in 2025, despite claims rising faster than premium growth. Non-life insurance claims climbed 8.10% year-on-year to $4.0b (NT$125.8b), outpacing the 5.67% growth in premiums, which reached $9.2b (NT$286.8b). Motor insurance, the largest segment within non-life insurance, accounted for $4.5b (NT$139.4b) in premiums. The widening gap between claims and premium growth signals increasing pressure on underwriting margins. This trend follows a slight decline in insurance penetration, measured as premiums as a share of GDP, to 10.14% in 2025 from 10.54% in 2024.
