Nearly 40% of Americans Hold Less Than $500 in Cash Savings
Nearly 40% of Americans hold less than $500 in cash savings. This balance is insufficient to cover most emergency expenses or a single month of rent in most American cities. The decline in savings is driven by the cost of living and essentials consuming all income for 34% of respondents in a February 2026 LendingTree survey. Two-thirds of Americans reported withdrawing from savings to pay for food and essentials over the past year. Consequently, 29% of Americans now have less in cash savings than they did a year ago. The erosion of these buffers is a result of stubborn inflation, high interest rates, and a general economic uncertainty that tighten household budgets.
