Klarna subsidiary PriceRunner seeks $8.3 billion from Google in Swedish antitrust case
PriceRunner is seeking $8.3 billion in damages from Google, the largest civil damages claim ever filed in a Swedish court. The claim arises from a 2017 European Commission binding decision that Google abused its dominance in online comparison shopping. PriceRunner alleges that Google systematically demoted competing price comparison services in its search results while favoring its own Google Shopping product. This conduct allegedly caused sustained and quantifiable commercial damage to PriceRunner over more than a decade. Sweden's Patent and Market Court has rescheduled the judgment date from April 15 to June 10 because additional time is needed to finalise the judgment. Klarna, which acquired PriceRunner in 2021, says the outcome of the proceedings is inherently uncertain and no assurance can be given that PriceRunner will succeed on liability or quantum.
