Iran's Bitcoin Transit Fee Forces Commodity Logistics into Crypto-Based Trade
Ship operators passing through the Strait of Hormuz during a two-week ceasefire will pay a $1 per barrel of crude oil transit fee in Bitcoin. Payment must be completed within seconds of assessment to prevent sanctions-driven tracking or confiscation. This requirement is part of a plan by Iran to ensure the following: vessels must report their cargo via email to the Iranian government, after which authorities will inform the ship of the ship's toll amount. Empty vessels are exempt from the charge. Vessels must use the northern route close to the Iranian coast and are subject to weapons inspections. Ships failing to comply with these regulations face the risk of being locked down. Around 300 to 400 vessels are stranded in the Gulf.
