Patients on high-deductible health plans pay all medical bills until the deductible is met. This shift occurred as consumers moved toward these plans to lower monthly payments after enhanced federal subsidies expired at the end of 2025 and monthly insurance rates on state and federal exchanges increased.
To manage these upfront costs, users of bronze and catastrophic plans can use Health Savings Accounts. HSA contributions reduce taxable income, the funds grow tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free.
For 2026, the IRS limits individual contributions to $4,400 and family plan contributions to $8,750.
