A homeless encampment was cleared. What followed reveals the fragile scaffolding of survival.
Displaced individuals from the cleared "Tent City" encampment in Owensboro now rely on temporary shelter and donated essentials to survive. The nonprofit Just People, using donor-funded resources, moved them to the Cadillac Motel after the encampment’s removal last Monday. Just People acknowledges its limitations — it cannot provide long-term stability or legal documentation. That work falls to St. Benedict’s Homeless Shelter, which is now helping displaced residents obtain birth certificates, IDs, and Social Security cards. The shelter also distributes hygiene items — deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste — and schedules for April soup kitchen operations. For people who have lost shelter, these documents are not bureaucratic formalities. They are prerequisites for employment, housing, and benefits. Both organizations say they need more donations to sustain support until every person’s needs are met.
